Lunch & Learn Transcript:
Hello, everyone, and welcome to today’s CopyDoodles Lunch and Learn. This is Lauren Wuscher and today we’re going to be talking about CopyDoodles to the Extreme: Unique Ways People Use CopyDoodles.
OK, a few side notes, next week’s topic is going to be some Super Last Minute Holiday Marketing tips. I’m going to be talking about New Year’s, any of the holidays in December, and it’s going to be pretty fun. So, make sure to check it out. There are some last minute things you can do, if you haven’t done any marketing yet for the holidays, or if you’ve kind of slacked out, if you haven’t been sending anything out. So, there are some last minute things you can do online, and I’m going to be showing you some cool ideas for that.
Some more side notes, somebody had asked me on last week’s Lunch and Learn when the Comics for 2012 and the New Year comics were going to be updated in CDAC. Well, they are updated. They are in there. And, we’ve also added a few other CopyComics, so make sure to check them out. Also, make sure to check out your CopyBling, which will be coming Saturday morning, it will also give you a few other updates that we’ve done in the CopyDoodles Access Club. So, if you’re looking for any New Year’s comics you can go in there now and you can download them.
And, if any of you celebrate St. Nick’s Day, which was yesterday, St. Nick has brought a Deal of the Week today, which is the CopyDoodles Swipe File Book. So, the reason I put this one up this week is because we’re going to be covering some really cool ways that people use CopyDoodles. I’m going to be showing you some unique ways, more than just sales letters and postcards, the normal stuff that you see. These are some really cool things that people are doing, they’ve thought outside of the box. So, a lot of these examples are in the Swipe File book, but there’s also a ton of other examples in the Swipe File book, and if you don’t have a copy yet make sure to head over to www.CopyDoodles.com/blog and click on the link there to find out more about it and how you can pick up a copy.
Then today’s webinar, CopyDoodles to the Extreme, I just explained exactly what it is. But, you can also catch the replay if you want to re-look at anybody’s examples that I show in today’s webinar, or if you want to send it over to any of your friends, or anything like that, the replay will be posted later today on www.CopyDoodles.com/blog If you haven’t been over there yet, make sure to head over there now. I know there’s a lot of new people on today’s webinar, so if you’ve missed any of the past webinars where I talked about adding CopyDoodles to your websites, I’ve also done other webinars where I’ve shown examples that people have sent me. And, you’re definitely going to want to head over there and check out all of the archives, because I’ve posted them every week. The videos are large, they might take a second to show up and load, but then the transcripts are also below if you’re not a video person and you don’t want to watch the whole video, you can watch that too.
So, I’m just going to jump into today’s webinar. Again, if you have any questions feel free to ask throughout the webinar. I’ll answer them the best that I can, because obviously I haven’t created all of these marketing pieces, but I have talked to a lot of the people that sent them to me, and do have a lot of information about them.
So, the first example is from Bret McDaniel of McDaniel Window and Door. This was a huge banner/sign, that he sent over to us. So, I just circled on the right-hand side where he’s using his CopyDoodles. He circled, “Not a chain, not a franchise. We’re local,” it’s a key, important thing that he wanted everybody to know. And, then he also wanted everybody to know that for free that he also gives a lifetime glass and breakage warranty.
So, this was a really big sign and he must have used, I’m not exactly sure, but our VectorDoodles. So, I’m going to show you how to access our VectorDoodles, because there’s a lot of other people in the examples that I’m going to show you next that used huge CopyDoodles, and in order to stay away from getting pixilated, or from blur, you’re going to want to use VectorDoodles. So, let me just open up the CopyDoodles Access Club.
This is www.copydoodles.com where you’ll see all of our replays on the right-hand side, you can click on ‘Previous Lunch and Learns.’ I’m just going to log into the Access Club really quickly. All of our CopyDoodles come in VectorDoodles, so I’m just going to pick one of our volumes. I’m going to click on a Doodle really quickly. If you are looking to download a VectorDoodle, like I said, for something very large, like a billboard, or maybe a bus, or a truck, which I’m going to show you in a minute, then make sure you scroll down and you’re going to want to check either the EPS or the EMF Vector Graphics. You’ll download those and you’ll use those on your marketing piece instead of using the normal print .PNG/.JPEG graphics. These are a lot larger, they won’t get pixilated, they won’t get blurry. And, they do only come in red, because they are huge files. So, if you have somebody creating this for you, it’s really, really simple to change the colors of the graphics, if you do want to do anything like that.
Then, if you aren’t into creating a huge banner or a sign, if you just don’t have the time, or you don’t have the funds in order to purchase the space to have a huge banner or sign like this, how you can do this on your end, you can create banner ads. We create a lot of banner ads and we put them up on our own sites, or you can actually find sites that are very similar to yours and you can pay for advertising there. You can work with GoogleAds and do a pay-per-click kind of deal too. They do have banner ads under their AdSense accounts, so you can get into that too. And, then you can also create fliers, or anything that you send out. You can create door things too, if you’re going around a neighborhood and you’re creating something similar to this. So, this would also work on a smaller end too.
Next, like I said, I was going to show you some really cool stuff today, but you may have seen this, I’ve posted it on our Facebook wall and we’ve kind of passed it around a lot. Darin Spindler of Kids Bowl Free, this summer they got a Kids Bowl Free tour bus and on the tour bus — he emailed me and was like, “Oh my gosh, I have to add a CopyDoodle, so he added the CopyDoodle right underneath where it says, “Every day, all summer.” And, he obviously used a VectorDoodles in order to create this because this was a huge tour bus. It was really cool, we got to walk around on it and check it out when we saw it in person, Mike and I. But, how you could do this on your scale, if you don’t have a tour bus, or you don’t have a huge truck or something like that, that you’re actually going to print CopyDoodles on, then something simple you can do, you can actually just do this online, you can go to your printer, create car magnets.
I’ve seen a lot of people create car magnets, or things for trucks and cars that have their business information on them, add some CopyDoodles onto that and you’re good to go. You don’t need something to cover your whole car, you don’t need something to cover your whole work vehicle, but just a car magnet sometimes does it, and it’s a lot cheaper. You’ll be able to change it around. Maybe you have a special offer for a month or something like that, a week, and you want to have a car magnet that talks about that special offer, create those. I’m pretty sure that there’s a lot sites online where you can actually get them created, load your files up and then print them too.
We’ve never done it, so I can’t give you any references, but it’s definitely a really great idea to play around with.
Then also Jeff Giagnocavo of Garner’s Mattress and Truck, he’s located here Lancaster, in Pennsylvania, but he just opened a store a few months ago, and he created a truck, their delivery truck, and they put CopyDoodles all over it. As you can see, there’s CopyDoodles here on the sides, and then he’s also got some CopyDoodles on the back too. He parks this truck outside of their mattress store, on the weekends, which I guess is their busiest time, and they park it right out front. He said people have actually left the store and then come back in because they notice something on the truck that caught their eye and they came back in and made purchases, so it’s also a really cool thing to do, if you have a store.
Something you could do on your own scale, which I’ll talk about also in a little bit, is just to create window signs for your store, just print them out on your computer. If you need a larger scale you can get somebody to print them out for you, put them in your windows because it will catch people’s eyes, especially when it has CopyDoodles on it.
And then, again, just — here’s the image of the side of the truck again.
And also Michael McClain of McClain Insurance, he put a huge sign, this is huge, above his insurance agency, and he just was — he always has some really great free offers and things he’s doing to get people into his business. He does really well with it. He always gives free pizza out, I think, one time a year. And, obviously, he was having a win a new Apple iPad, and he used our CopyDoodles arrows in order to do that. And, like I said you can see he used VectorDoodles, but he did change the color, it’s really simple to do.
And, then, again, on your scale you could window stickers. I know you can get window stickers created very easily, you could put signs in your office. And, the funny thing is I was thinking about this when I was putting together this webinar about different ways you could kind of scale these down, if you didn’t want to create a huge banner, you didn’t have an outside office. And, I actually live above a funeral home, kind of creepy, but I don’t mind, my landlord is awesome. So, I actually have a CopyDoodles sign on my front door because I had people that kept coming to my door trying to give me flowers for funerals, or trying to deliver caskets, because I’m right next door, so I created a CopyDoodles sign and put it right on my front door that says, “This is not the funeral home,” and I haven’t gotten anybody knocking on my door in a very long time, since I put that sign up. But, you could really do this with anything.
And then Brad Slavin, he created these door signs. So, I guess these are just door signs, I’m not exactly sure what he used them for, but I’m assuming that he used them in a local area, maybe his store was in a small town and he went from door to door and left these door signs on people’s doors.
So, how could you do it on your scale? You could do exactly this. I get a ton of stuff on my door — menus from different companies and businesses, whether it be a menu for their services, I get stuff from Clear all the time trying to sell me Clear, which I already have, and I get people trying to sell me their food at the restaurants. And, all they do is they slip their flyer under my door, they mix it in with my mail, or they stick it in the handle. And, if I had a door hanger it might stay on my door better and it might catch my eye a little better than people just leaving it, and it would probably reduce the trash that’s on the street, because it usually just flies off my door.
But, these are a really great idea, if you’re a local business and you’re looking for something to do, and you’re allowed to put door signs on people’s doors, because not all areas will allow you to do something like this.
Calendars are really perfect right now, if you hurry. It’s really not that hard to do. I know that iPhoto does a calendar thing you can create through iPhoto. I think Snapfish probably let’s you do stuff like this, if you’re sending it out maybe to a few people, other than that you may need to get a printer to do this for you. But, it’s a really great idea.
I actually get a calendar every year from one of my friends who owns a printing company, and it’s super cool. It’s a desktop calendar, it’s not a hanging calendar like this, but I use it every year because it’s free and I don’t have to go out and worry about picking one up. Every year they send me an email just reminding me, “Hey, don’t forget to click here and update your email address and your mailing address so that we can send you our calendar this year.” On the left-hand side they send a tip, a different tip about their marketing, or something you can do in your marketing, they refer you back to their business, they have their phone number, their email address, their address, their Facebook site, everything that you need on the calendar, but then again, it’s also a calendar for myself. But, if I ever need to contact them to do printing for me, their number is right here on my desk, right next to my keyboard, I don’t need to look it up, I don’t need to save it in my phone, I don’t need to find a business card with their information. I know exactly what they do, and what their services are, how I can find, then how I can contact them immediately.
So, the only thing I would say is missing from this calendar that you see on the screen here are — you could easily put CopyDoodles in the calendar, just directly in the dates, I mean put them small, obviously, because you want people to have room where they can write their own things there, but you could easily put, you know, “Holiday Sale Starts on the 16th of December,” and you could put that in a calendar that you send out to people and then when you have that sale they’ll already know about it months in advance. It’s kind of like their on a VIP list, they know what you’re going to have. Maybe you don’t want to do this if you’re sending it to somebody and you want them to buy your stuff at full price and you don’t want them to continue to wait for your sales, but you could put fun things in there, like if you know their birthday you could put their own birthday on there. You could offer them special offers on their birthday — oh my gosh, you could do so much with this. You could put days you want people to visit your websites, days that your TV show comes out. There’s a whole realm of things that you could do with a calendar. So, these are just fun to play around with.
You can create CD and DVD artwork. This is a CD, a bonus CD, that Mike created for Super Conference one year. And, anybody can do this if you have any CD products. Or, maybe if you have an opt-in list and you give away a free CD to your list, you could really, easily create a CD with your information on the front and give it out to people as a free offer and then it would also be kind of a call to action, directing people back to your site, not only on the CD when they put it in their computer or when they listen to it, but also on the front of the CD, so they always know what your CD is, they don’t lose it, they don’t get it mixed in with anything.
On the left-hand side we have Rory Fatt, he has a free CD that he gives out, and he actually puts it in a case that he has designed, and he also puts a order form on the front, and that’s just a really great idea for things to send out. But, if you’re an info-marketer, then definitely do this with all of the products that you have, because it’s really simple to do. It’s easy to get these printed up, and it definitely makes your pieces look a lot more professional too.
And, then somebody asked if the CD booklet in the template is in Access Club. No, it is not a CopyTemplate, not that I know of, but that’s a really great idea, and I could talk to Mike about getting something similar put in there, because we’re always looking for new ideas.
Moving on, newspaper ads, I know that some of you probably still do some offline advertising in newspapers or magazines, though I’m not sure how many people continue to do it anymore. But, as you can see this is a completely doodled up newspaper ad that somebody put in their local paper. They’re using CopyDoodles all over it. The great thing is that you can use CopyDoodles in black and white like this, you could just print it out, you don’t have to pay for color, especially newspaper color doesn’t really show up as brightly as it might in a magazine, or something like that.
I see so many advertisements in magazines and newspapers that I wish used CopyDoodles, especially in those magazine ads were they do like a whole page of 12 ads or something like that, and each ad has a picture, it has your call to action, your information, or maybe no call to action, if they’re not doing good advertising, but if all they did was circle their ad, or put an arrow next to their ad, it would stick out so much more than the other 11 ads that are there on the page. It’s just a really great way, all you have to do is add one doodle and you’re done with your normal ad that you put in a newspaper or magazine.
Howard Berg created this t-shirt. He’s the fastest reader in the world. And, then what he did was he just mentioned that on this t-shirt, and then he also just mentioned his last joint venture was with Justin Timberlake, so he had a little bit of fun with this. And, then he also put his phone number on there. And, when I saw him he was wearing this t-shirt to Super Conference, I believe, this past year, so this past April/May, whenever it was. And, he actually told me that he did book [a lot of] gigs just from wearing this t-shirt. He had two t-shirts, he had this one and then he had another one that just talked about what he does and had some fun pictures on it.
And, really, you could easily do this on your scale. I think what he did was he probably just bought a plain t-shirt at Michael’s or AC Moore, or JoAnn’s, or any store like that, and then he probably also, at the same store, picked up iron-on t-shirt printables. You can get them anywhere, they’re super-cheap, but I think you get like 15 in a pack for maybe $5, you know, the ones that you, if you want to print on white it’s obviously much cheaper than if you’re printing on a color, because it’s a little different. But, he added a CopyDoodle on there. The other really cool thing is that people noticed it and people saw it right away, and it looked different, and it was just a different t-shirt that he wore everyday, and he didn’t have to promote himself to people because it was right there on the front of his shirt. And, it probably started a lot of conversations with people at the conference because they probably wanted to find out more about his t-shirt and what he does, and why he’s the world fastest reader.
So, just one note, if you are creating these, make sure to mirror the image, if you have any text, so that when you print it out and you iron it on that it’s not backwards. I have done that before. So, just a word of advice.
This is our CopyDoodles booth from the past InfoSummit two months ago when we were in Atlanta. We put up a huge sign. I know we don’t really have any CopyDoodles on the sign, but we do have the stress balls, as you can see, right underneath on the table. We did these yellow smiley face stress balls, I wish I would have taken a picture of one of them, so I could have the huge stress ball to show you. But, you can probably get the picture, it’s just a ball. It has a smiley face on one side. We had a whole 60s theme, so it totally went along with the theme. Then on the back we just used a CopyDoodles font and we wrote something like, “Want to boost your response?” “Increase response?” Something like that, and then it had our website on the back. So, it had a very small call to action, we had it as a giveaway at our booth, just fun to play around with.
Then, obviously, the signs, which you can’t really see, but I’ll circle with my arrow here, the signs were all done in CopyDoodles.
And, this is our banner ad, which we created from the Super Conference this past year, and we used CopyDoodles all over these. We used it to say, “The quick and easy antidote for plain vanilla, boring-looking marketing,” and then we also used it — we had a magic hat. It was this whole magic theme. We have a theme at our booth every year, but magic hat. We had some fun magic doodles coming out of the hat. We had CopyDoodles all over the signs and banners that were here, and obviously on all of our products.
So, make sure that if you’re ever going to promote at a show or a conference, or anything like that, that you definitely use CopyDoodles. I mean going to Super Conference, going to InfoSummit, we are one in a mass of people that use CopyDoodles, so most of the banner ads and signs there have CopyDoodles. But, if you’re going to something like maybe even a different marketing show, or you’re going to, you know, an electrician show, I’m not sure if they even have those, but you’ll be the only one with CopyDoodles and your banner will totally stand out from everybody. Or, you could just do what we did at Super Conference and have someone dress up as a magician, and call people over, and you get a ton of people at your booth, a ton of sales, but, you know, whatever is different always works.
Then also just some other giveaways, if you are thinking about doing a booth or promoting anywhere, or anything like that, what we had is, on the left-hand side, a while ago Mike created these luggage tags, and these are actually a huge hit because everybody goes to a conference, they had a hard time finding their luggage on the way there, it’s a pain to pick it out from the other millions of black suitcases, and brown suitcases, and blue suitcases you see, so we give out luggage tags, which has our website and information on it, and then they use them all the time. You wouldn’t believe how many we would see wheeling around conferences with their luggage that already have our luggage tags.
Then on the right-hand side we had t-shirts, which we also had as a giveaway. On the front I think it said, “Have you Doodled today?” And then the back just had “CopyDoodles rock.” We wore these t-shirts when we were in the booth and then we also gave them away to people. And if people were caught wearing the t-shirts, they would win a prize. So, that was cool too because if people came to the booth, you know, they won a t-shirt or something like that, then we later saw them wearing the t-shirt, they’d get another bonus, so they would pretty much do the marketing for us, if they wanted to be entered to win the additional prize. So, everybody was wearing CopyDoodles shirts and everybody noticed it and people would come over to the booth and say, “Hey, I saw somebody wearing a shirt.” So, people love these.
Also, Linda Steele Thom from Mail Marketing Plus sent me in some coffee mugs and car coasters that they’ve used as promotional giveaways, that they did at a vendor booth. Whether they’re small or large, your promotions, or whatever you’re handing out, you could totally use CopyDoodles on them, you could use CopyDoodles on anything that you create.
Something that we also did at Super Conference, which is really, really cheap to do is, a really cheap giveaway, is we had a contest, and people would pick out of the magic hat, like I showed you, that magic theme that we had going on. And, they’d pick out a dollar bill. And, the dollar bill was all done with one of our PunchOut Comics. It is available to everybody under the CopyTemplate section. So, just download it. It was a PunchOut Comic and it had Mike’s picture. It said it was a $1 million dollar bill. And every person that picked out one of those bills won a different prize. So, we would just — you could either sticky note directly on them, you can use a CopyDoodles to sticky note on top of the dollar bills, or something like that. And, everybody won a prize, so that was a really, really easy and cheap giveaway. We actually printed all of the dollar bills at home, and just cut them out, you know, printed like 20 on a page, cut them out, and threw them in and it was really easy, and it got a lot of people into our booth because a lot of people wanted to pick out of the magic hat, they wanted to know what was inside.
Again, just like our stress balls, you could put CopyDoodles anywhere.
Then, Jerilynne Knight, she used our to-do template, she actually took it and she put it on Facebook, she also used as a giveaway for people that are in her program, or for people who sign up for her opt-in, so it’s just something really easy to pull from, the CopyTemplate, you can pull from it and you’re done.
This is from Tom Boost. These are slides from a video or a presentation that he did. On your scale, really anyone could do this. You can create a video, you can create a presentation, a webinar, a super-cheap way to get your word out there. Maybe even if you’re worried about presenting in front of people or if you’ve never done it before, webinars are so easy to do, nobody sees you, people hear you, just like I’m on this webinar now, you don’t know, I could be hanging out in my gym clothes. So, I don’t have to get dressed, I don’t have to worry about it, I don’t have to put make-up, and I use CopyDoodles on everything, and if you use it on your presentations it will keep people’s eyes awake, depending on how long your presentation is.
Then, this is super-cool I really like this idea and if you were ever on or ever caught the replay of, in our ‘Resources’ section, Victoria Eden’s Success Webinar, if you haven’t seen the webinar make sure to head over to it. If you log into CopyDoodles Access Club click on the ‘Resources’ section, it’s right in there. What she does is she creates books that she gives away. So, she loves to write, she writes books, then as her opt-in she gives away actual books, mails them to people as a giveaway. In the book, the book is basically just a really long sales letter, it gives people information, but at the end there’s a call to action to hire her as your insurance agent. Then what she does inside the book is she also gives these bookmarks out, which is a really awesome and cost-effective way to get people to not only read your book, but even if they don’t read your book to see that there’s a deadline and they can get more products and services for $2, or maybe they get enrolled into her monthly program, or something like that. But, it’s just a really great way if people don’t have the time to read the whole book and read your whole sales letter, than at least they notice the bookmark, or maybe they’ll even use the bookmark for another book they’re reading and somebody will see it, you never know.
And, then Cindy is here. Her son is a musician and he created this sign for when he plays at events, and he wanted to create an opt-in list so that people could find out where his schedule was, where he was playing, stuff like that. And, so what he did is he just created a sign, he posted it above his opt-in list, so instead of him having to tell people on the microphone, “Make sure to sign up for my list,” and then people not knowing where it is, he just created this great sign with the sign-up here. You could do this if you’re doing promotions out and about and you have a vendor booth or anything like that, just create a big sign with a big CopyDoodle on it, and get people to sign up for your list. Here he’s not even, you know, giving away anything — I mean he’s giving away free music when you sign up, but he’s not giving anything away immediately, but this is catching people’s eye and it’s getting more people to sign up.
Finally, Michael McClain again, I’m sure you’ve seen this, we show it all the time. But, people use CopyDoodles in videos, obviously they use them in YouTube and I showed you how to do that on one of the past success webinars. But, this is actually a broadcast TV commercial. So, I think a lot of people don’t realize that with CopyDoodles you can still get great resolution and a great look on TV. You can definitely do that with the Vector Doodles, you could do that with any other Doodles in the Access Club. I think he created this before we even had VectorDoodles, so definitely play around with it. He’s obviously circling his phone number and his call to action, and it’s fun to play around with.
